Historic Montgomery

Spend the day and enjoy Texas' third oldest town, North of Houston and just 15 miles west of Conroe on Highway 105 . Montgomery has been voted by the readers of The Courier the best place in the county to go antique shopping for the years 2001-2003.

Steeped in history, Montgomery is the official birthplace of the Lone Star flag. Designed by Dr. Charles B. Stewart in 1839 for the Republic of Texas, the flag and seal were adopted by the State of Texas, which inspired the slogan "Lone Star State".

Dr. Stewart was the first to sign the Texas' Declaration of Independence. He lived and worked in Montgomery and is buried in the New Cemetery that was founded in 1868.

Montgomery began in 1826 as an Indian trading post at Town Creek, about a mile north of the center of town. It was chartered in 1837 and remains a small historic Texas town with shady trees and friendly people. You're invited to stroll back in time, browse through antique and gift shops and enjoy our restaurants. Visit the N. H. Davis Pioneer Complex & Museum for a view of life in the 1840s.

Beautiful 21,000-acre Lake Conroe is just minutes east, the Sam Houston National Forest is north of town, and the Texas Renaissance Festival (6 weekends in the fall) is a few minutes west.
