Shopping in Downtown Historic Montgomery is a step back in time
to the 19th Century, when horses, wagons and buggies dotted the countryside. Don't be surprised
if you actually see horseback riders as you tour the town. Downtown shops were built close together,
primarily for ease in walking. Important, too, was the community that built up around it.
Downtown quickly became the place for folks to gather. Residents
would linger in shop doorways to discuss the latest news. Shop owners would venture outside and
wave to customers who were coming into town – eager to do business. The schools and churches were
within walking distance, making a trip to town almost a social event.
And, 100 years later, it really hasn’t changed much. Today, a
stroll along Montgomery’s Liberty Street is almost magical, as though the next sound you’ll hear
will be the gentle rustling of a lady’s skirt as she brushes past you on her way to a nearby shop.
While cars have long since replaced the horse and buggy, downtown
Montgomery has many pedestrian-friendly, tree-lined streets making it fun and easy to shop the many
antique, retail stores and eateries throughout the historic corridor.
From clothing, crafts, gifts, furniture and collectibles, to
dolls, quilts and candles, Montgomery’s downtown area has something for everyone.
Other nearby restaurants along FM 149 and Texas 105 make Montgomery
a cozy place to enjoy casual or family dining. Additional retail shopping can be found along neighboring
streets, for those visitors wanting a particular item.
